Mustad Red Slow Death Hooks - The Pro's Secret

A Perspective on Perfection
by Gary Parsons
National Freshwater Fishing Hall Of Fame Legendary Angler

In the mid-90s a close group of walleye pros were generating tremendous results with a new technique called slow death. Incredible action was being added to live-bait presentations by bending hooks in a certain fashion. I knew it was something special, but because I couldn't master the precise hook bend, I was getting really inconsistent results. Working with the Mustad product development team, Keith and I spend countless hours testing hook bends until we perfected a hook design that anybody could rig effectively.

I fish streams of north Michigan. Bait fishing with nightcrawlers, Wader
fishing against the current, letting bait drift to the hole in front of you
10' or so. Thus not disturbing water ahead, I use a 9 foot #7/#8 water
eagle claw flyrod ,Berkley maxx #8 lb.low visibility green no leader, usually
three #3 or #7 split shot,as little as possible. This berkley maxx gives
you the best of both, low line memory coil, as well as the toughness around
all of the rocks, gravel, stumps, and trees, and the low visibility green
color works great for me . I rebuilt an old model 48 automatic reel, we used
these automatics 50 years ago,and mine works great as well as my back up. I
fill it with backing line just to fill the space so my berkley won't be
wound around a small diameter, also one retrieval turn of the automatic reel
with the bigger diameter gives me faster line retrieval. Then I install
100' of Berkley maxx, you don't need a lot of line, these are 10'-12' wide
streams, and this way you can easily discard it as needed. wire hooks permit
unsnaging around all the fallen trees and dense cover around holes and banks.
Just bend back, and a light file of the hook. I fished these streams over
50 years ago with my father. It's the only fishing I do, or care to do for
that matter. These are trout streams, brown, rainbow, and brook..10"-12" to
about 25" 27" at times spring and fall, as well as steelhead's. Thanks for
the hooks I only use the gold color, they seem to attract the fish better.
My brother uses snell hooks I tie on so I get a cleaner line presentation.

Well, I have already used these for some time and finally they run out of my stock
(I do aim pearch, not pikes ;-) The technique I use (this is from Google
translation, so not sure, whether proper) is "side strap"

I fish Lake Oahe and these mustad slow death hooks seem to be the best thing going. I
don't get out a lot but seem to loose a lot either by snags or pike.

We use these mustad gold slow death hooks for trolling for Walleye.

I use Wing It Bottom Bouncers, easy to change weight depending on depth and speed.
The Mack Lure Smile Blade allows you to troll at very slow speeds,

Thanks for your hooks. As far as I read about these hooks so they have very specific
usage. So I decided to try if it can work here in Kazakhstan. I have a friend and we
are fans of boating and fising. We have bass boat exactly like a lot of bass boats
in US and we spend a lot of weekends outside city in local lakes. Now is winter and
all lakes are under about 30 inch of ice so I am just deraming about fishing and
buying all kind things of to try it in fishing season.
