These particular rapala lures went essentially extinct in Canada a few years ago. I
can't find them ANYWHERE up here. Every other color except the gold with black back.
This is crappy because the big pike and walleye in Alberta LOVE that lure. My Dad
had one for over 30 years - I was pretty much a chewed up mess - but it would catch
fish when other hooks wouldn't - like magic. I had one since I was around 14 (wow -
math says it and dads might have been bought same day) - same thing - the favorite
hook. One day this summer a big eruption of white water saw my dads hook stolen by
"something darn big" - snapped 20 pound braid with relative ease. Being as he's
getting on in years - I gave him my rapala 7" floating gold. Two days later -
similar performance - 40 pound test braid this time - but fish swam under a log and
wound around some branches. With much pouting and sore arms - we gave up and cut the
line without ever seeing that fish either.
I was thrilled to see 3 for auction on eBay when I looked this morning.Christmas
shopping for dad is impossible. I no doubt found something that I KNOW he can't have
bought himself already, we've tried to find these dang things since mid august since
we lost the last two we had in captivity. I realize many guys are collecting these -
and they do have some increasing money value. These hooks will be heading to the
lake immediately when the ice leaves.
